Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Players will gain the ability to question specific rulings made by the official, echoing the practice currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
