Our Premier Album of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Number One Position.

Initially, this work may look closer to an arduous academic examination rather than the latest pop record from an artist who just had a previous hit was a collaboration with an international pop star. Broken across 4 different movements and sung in 13 tongues, we have a breathtaking classical-tinged album investigating feminine mystique, spiritual transcendence, and physical change, often via the perspective of various women saints. The end of a love affair—a theme treated with raw honesty elsewhere—is shot skyward on this record, supported by the constant presence of a major symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer within a vast list of contributors. The pure audacity alone renders the efforts of other pop stars seem quite modest.

Transcending Academic Pretense

That this album succeeds in transcend overly intellectual chin-stroking feels nothing short of a miracle, and full praise belonging to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time album to alchemize historical sounds and modern styles, the stakes feel much greater on Lux, and the balancing act far more precarious. What really raises this fourth release, beyond its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and inherent drama, is an essential sense of fun. Similar to the iconic artist during her height, there is a captivating quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener up in its tornado. When she is breaking your heart in two, the listener still want to stay right there for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That playful energy comes forth brightly on the stirring piano-led ballad about Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool for several moments. Then, everything falls silent, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh followed by a comment before a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo thuds in like cartoonish impact. The track then segues into the frenetic track featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo appearance from none other than herself.

"The charm of this album lies in you never exactly understand—nor wish to know—where it will go to next."

Nearly every track ends at a completely distinct point from where it began. A track explores the fleeting nature of celebrity over a featherlight symphony before disintegrating into electronic cacophony. Another, a song that recalls the artist's earlier rhythmic work begins out moody and sinister, featuring menacing beats, before fluttering flamenco handclaps and a heavenly choir arrive to smooth its rough corners.

The Balance Of Experiment & Accessibility

A key balancing act of Lux is navigating the gap between radical experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is little surprise that it has become her first work to crack the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a collection of utterly catchy hits. A song performed primarily in the English language swells around a chorus that seems to gather increasingly nagging hooks while it spins skyward. That feat is echoed on a different expansive ballad that grows and contracts, weaving multiple tunes like an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its jaunty, theatrical drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares with cultural honesty of contemporary breakup songs, lambasting a former partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing carry a painted-on edge, like a storybook character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

Lux is popular music on a maximalist scale, an ambitious grasp for capital-A artistry amid of looming AI-generated sameness. It eschews self-absorption for glorious elevation, creating a dramatic drama that masterfully manages its built-in ridiculousness. It is an abundant well of buried gems that takes patience to completely mine but never feels like a chore. Where other major pop albums of the year seemed like a meager meal, this record offers a lavish feast at which the characters at it, some intoxicated on sacred wine, flit from conversations about historical figures, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking grief, and shared gossip about useless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from music's truly restlessly inventive practitioner.
