One Piece Ends a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in January, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will go on a three-month break until April, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, One Piece will release a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month break that started in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may result in one episode of the series covering a single manga chapter, with others alternatively covering more material or additional to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of an era for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of production, which focused on being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have numerous side stories, and the standard of the art can change drastically between one episode and the next. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple at most releasing each year, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
