Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
