European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
